The incarceration of U.S. Army communications specialist, Cameron John Wagenius, is now officially tied to 2021’s colossal breaches of phone record data from AT&T and Verizon by the Department of Justice. Wagenius was apprehended in Texas on December 20, 2021, and accused of unlawfully transferring confidential phone records. Later, he was extradited to Washington state.
Wagenius’ charges are associated with previous indictments of hackers, Connor Moucka and John Binns, who reportedly infiltrated cloud computing firm, Snowflake. The companies impacted by their data theft include AT&T and Verizon, from whom extensive customer call logs were stolen. U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman, publicly underscored the connection between the cases.
This announcement marks the first recognition by prosecutors that Wagenius was involved in the breaches at Snowflake during 2021. Renowned security journalist, Brian Krebs initially reported these connections. The Snowflake hacks were one of last year’s pivotal cyberattacks, affecting a host of corporations, primarily due to insufficient multi-factor protection.
Wagenius, according to Krebs, boasted on a known hacker forum, claiming access to call logs from VP Kamala Harris and then-President-elect Donald Trump. He threated to release all stolen files unless Moucka was freed. The attackers are accused of pilfering vital data, including personal information, identification numbers, and bank account details. Wagenius remains in detention in Washington state.
