In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to maintain the TikTok ban in the US, former president Donald Trump dropped mixed signals regarding his stand on the ban on his Truth Social platform. His comments followed a “productive” chat with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which involved addressing the TikTok issue.
In a previous stance, Trump seemed to oppose the app’s ban after encouraging the Supreme Court to avoid the law that calls for the app’s closure or sale by January 19. However, his recent declaration depicted a more neutral tone, stating that he needs more “time to weigh the scenario,” and implying that the ruling was “anticipated.”
“Stay tuned,” Trump teased his audience.
Before the Supreme Court’s verdict, Trump hinted at a fruitful discussion with Xi on his social media platform, expressing optimism that they would jointly solve several contentious issues.
“We engaged in talks about trade balance, the ongoing fentanyl issue, TikTok, among other subjects,” Trump revealed on his social platform. He further added, “Together, President Xi and I will strive to make the world more stable and secure.”
Unfortunately, their conversation had little effect on the Supreme Court ruling which permitted the ban to proceed. TikTok, now set to shut down in the US, challenges that it could not meet the deadline to find a buyer.
The future of TikTok in the U.S. remains hazy. Post-ruling, uncertainties arise whether it will be disabled from January 19 or remain accessible on devices where it’s already installed. The Biden administration reportedly explores alternatives to keep the app up in the U.S., even if the ban was upheld.
