Threads, Meta’s latest social media platform, declared on Thursday its introduction of an exclusive ‘media’ tab for photos and videos. This update comes hot on the heels of comparable changes made by opposing platforms, Bluesky and X (formerly Twitter). Further, Threads users can now tag people in shared photos.
Distinction was shed on this development by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who expressed in a Threads post that the ‘media’ tab would facilitate swift browsing of shared photos and videos. Acknowledging that this augmentation was eagerly anticipated by the community, it also benefits Threads in its competitiveness with video-oriented platforms like TikTok.
The roll-out of these features accompanies the ‘markup’ feature launched last week, making it seamless for users to add personal comments to shared posts.
Wednesday saw Threads’ recorded user activity for the month reaching 320 million, a climb from last month’s 300 million. This increase contrasts with the slowing growth reported by Bluesky, which, despite a mere under 10% growth in December 2024, is still expanding.
Threads continues to increase its user base by consistently releasing new features: post scheduling, following profiles from other fediverse servers, custom feeds, and AI-generated summaries for trending topics.
