Thinking Machines Lab: Ex-OpenAI CTO’s Vision for Advanced, Tailored AI

Former OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati has unveiled her latest venture, Thinking Machines Lab, an AI-focused startup. Aiming to revolutionize AI accessibility and capabilities, the company’s mission is to create “multimodal” AI systems that collaborate seamlessly with individuals, accommodating their unique needs and goals.

The team at Thinking Machines Lab, which includes former OpenAI co-founder John Schulman as Chief Scientist and ex-Chief Research Officer Barret Zoph as CTO, believes that while AI’s potential is vast, there are significant gaps that need to be addressed. They aim to bridge these gaps by developing AI systems that are not only more powerful but also more understandable, adaptable, and beneficial to society.

Murati emphasized the importance of AI safety, stating that the company will prioritize preventing misuse of their models. They will share best practices and support external research on alignment, ensuring responsible development and deployment of AI systems.

By rethinking objectives and focusing on real-world value, Thinking Machines Lab aspires to drive transformative applications of AI, particularly in scientific discovery and engineering breakthroughs. The startup’s hiring process is ongoing, seeking experienced machine learning scientists, engineers, and a research program manager.

Murati’s journey in the AI realm includes leading the development of ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex while at OpenAI. Her experience also spans Tesla, where she played a key role in the development of Autopilot, and Leap Motion, where she focused on hand-tracking technology.

Thinking Machines Lab joins a wave of AI ventures founded by former OpenAI executives, including Safe Superintelligence and Anthropic.
