Redefining Mobility with Tech-Integrated White Canes
Despite broad advancements in technology, the iconic white cane for visually impaired individuals hasn’t seen much innovation. London-based WeWalk and Washington-based Glidance are seeking to change that.
WeWalk’s 21st Century White Cane
WeWalk fosters an amalgamation of tradition and innovation. Their offerings include the $850 Smartcane 2 and the $1,150 Smartcane+ 2, the latter distinguished by its voice-controlled assistant, proving to be an imperative resource for those in need of obstacle detection.
The system connects wirelessly to an iPhone/Android smartphone, offering onboard-directions via an integrated speaker, effectively introducing an interactive, tactile experience that’s unique to smart devices.
Glidance Brings Autonomy to Mobility Aids
Meanwhile, Glidance, a new player on the scene, presents “Glide” – a $1,500 autonomous mobility aid that connects to a wheeled base. This sophisticated tech solution not only identifies impending obstacles but also notifies users of other approaching features like doors, elevators, and stairs, aiming to enhance the safety of visually-impaired individuals.
Beyond these enticing features, Glidance locks at intersections, ensuring user safety amidst fast-approaching traffic. Currently, Glidance is finalizing a $5 million seed towards developing a shipping product, due for release in around a year.
