Diversifying its audio streaming service, Spotify now bounds into the edtech market. The media giant announced the auspicous debut of its ‘audio courses,’ facilitating users to pursue knowledge in diverse domains, including business, tech, music, and lifestyle. The initial beneficiaries of this launch will be the streaming service’s UK users.
Seeking to reimagine itself beyond a music platform, Spotify is ever-ready to boost its revenue by offering multiple audio types. This can be anything, from monetized audio and video podcasts (even the AI ads kind), to paid ‘extra hours’ for the audiophiles who exhaust their free monthly cap of 15 hours, yet wish to keep listening. Notably, it poses competition to Audible with a standalone audiobook subscription for just $10/month.
Should the ‘audio courses’ feature garner global acceptance, Spotify might consider monetizing it and making it widely available.
As a preface, Spotify has suggested several courses to kick-start the learning journey. Interestingly, ahead of the official announcement, tech enthusiast Chris Messina spotted this development. Among his findings were courses catering to technical enthusiasts wishing to leverage AI, understand Web3, and grasp the metaverse concept and other digital tools.
Users will have the added power to customize their Spotify library to display ‘Podcasts & Courses’ instead of just ‘Podcasts’.
Despite the company being tight-lipped about launching the feature in the US, Messina managed to access the category pages via search, albeit empty, hinting at the ongoing development for the US audience.
