Reliance Sets to Dominate Global AI with World’s Largest Data Centre in India

In a groundbreaking move, Reliance, under the stewardship of Mukesh Ambani, has intentions to construct the world’s largest AI data center. The proposed behemoth facility, located in Jamnagar, India, will reportedly have a capacity of three gigawatts to leverage the increasing demand for AI.

The planned implementation will overshadow the current largest data center – Microsoft’s 600-megawatt site in Virginia, as reported by Bloomberg. It is anticipated that the project’s budget may fall between the $20 billion to $30 billion range.

The financing for this lofty venture is off to a good start. Ambani amassed over $25 billion in 2020 through a coterie of investors comprising Meta, Google, Silver Lake, General Atlantic, KKR, Mubadala and PIF. These funds are destined for the expansion of Reliance’s retail and telecom sectors, which currently hold sway in India. Reliance is recognized as India’s most valuable company.

Reliance’s data centre plans to implement renewable energy as its primary-power source, generated from a neighbouring energy complex housing solar, wind, and hydrogen power units.

The pursuit of AI excellence sees a partnership between Ambani, purchasing chips from Nvidia, to build AI infrastructure within India, as announced in October.

This strategic move by Reliance comes hot on the heels of commitments from OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle who pledged a whopping $500 billion towards AI infrastructure in the United States via their Stargate Project.
