Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have publicly criticized Meta’s revised fact-checking policy, arguing that the changes undermine free speech.
“Harmful Content Policies: A Red Flag for Democracy?”
In their statement, Harry and Meghan insist that Meta’s alterations to its ‘Hateful Content Policies’ not only fail to safeguard free expression, but they also create an atmosphere ripe for abuse and hate speech. They argue that these situations silence communities vital for a thriving democracy.
“Meta’s DEI Commitments: An Abandonment?”
The pair also pointed out Meta’s intentions to forgo its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) commitments. Meghan Markle, who recently reactivated her Instagram account after halting her social media presence in 2018, has had ‘constructive conversations’ with Meta executives concerning online safety, following her confessed experiences with online harassment since her marriage to Prince Harry.
Notably, Meta’s policy changes have been termed ‘a concern for anyone with a conscience’ by Mastodon CEO Eugen Rochko, and ‘deeply troubling’ by Michael McConnell, co-chair of Meta’s oversight board, indicating dissatisfaction among other high-profile figures too.
