Pinksky, a new Android app, offers an Instagram-like experience built on Bluesky, an open-source social media platform. With a familiar user interface that includes photo profiles, a feed of posts, and a Stories section, Pinksky aims to attract users seeking a photo-centric social networking environment.
Pinksky leverages Bluesky’s social connections and feeds, allowing users to access their existing networks when logging in. However, it is limited by the platform’s constraints, including a maximum of four photos per post and one-minute video length.
Despite its Instagram-like appearance, Pinksky targets a different audience, emphasizing photo sharing and connections rather than viral content. It joins a growing number of apps exploring this niche, including Flashes, Pixelfed, and Reelo.
Developer Ramon Souza, inspired by open technologies like ActivityPub and Nostr, created Pinksky. He sees potential for integration with Mastodon or Nostr in the future. However, expansion would necessitate a business model, such as paid premium features.
Currently, Pinksky remains an experimental app, with its future direction subject to user interest. By offering a classic photo-sharing experience on Android, it complements the growing ecosystem of apps built on Bluesky’s open technology.
