OpenAI has introduced a testing phase for a novel feature allowing new users to signup for ChatGPT solely using a phone number, eliminating the need for email. The innovation, currently in beta phase, is exclusive to the U.S. and India. However, there are confines to the service.
Users registering with a phone number cannot escalate to the premium plans such as ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro without verifying their account via email. Furthermore, multi-factor authentication is also immobilized without a valid email. Once a number is linked to a ChatGPT account, it cannot spawn new accounts.
OpenAI cautions about recycled or reused numbers causing errors, with no workaround in sight until a system update in 2025. They have also demarcated no intentions of expanding phone-only signups in other regions.
OpenAI’s drive for augmentation has led to explorations of low-impact methods to increase the reach of the AI-powered ChatGPT. In December, they launched a service allowing U.S users to interact with ChatGPT over the phone for 15 minutes per month at no charge and introduced a ChatGPT version on WhatsApp with basic functionality.
The vibrant user base of ChatGPT, boasting over 300 million weekly users, supports impressive revenue streams for the company. Despite significant financial hurdles, OpenAI continues to forge ahead, driven by the goal of making the technology more accessible.
