OpenAI Collaborates with U.S National Labs for Advanced Nuclear Weapons Research

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research lab, is said to be working collaboratively with the Department of Energy’s U.S. National Laboratories. Furthermore, it has been revealed they will use OpenAI’s state-of-the-art models for nuclear weapons security amongst other science-related projects.

As part of this collaboration, OpenAI, joined by Microsoft, its leading investor, will work to establish a computing model on the supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This advanced AI-driven resource would be made accessible for scientists hailing from Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, as well as Sandia National Labs.

Interestingly, one of the areas where this technology will be implemented is nuclear defense. OpenAI has stated its commitment to supporting the U.S. National Laboratories’ work in lowering the risk of nuclear warfare and securing nuclear weaponry and materials, going so far as to offer consultation to security-cleared researchers.

Introducing this new partnership, OpenAI shares that it signifies the “beginning of a new era.” This era promises a future where AI technology is leveraged to accelerate scientific discovery, reinforce national security, and bolster government-driven initiatives.
