“Mexico’s Resistance to Google’s Gulf Renaming Stance”

In response to a recent intent by Google Maps to oblige Donald Trump’s executive order to rename several American landmarks, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has decided to take a stand. At the forefront of the renaming controversy is the Gulf of Mexico, proposed to be renamed as Gulf of America. Sheinbaum announced in a press statement on Wednesday that a formal request for explanation would be dispatched to Google, inviting them to reevaluate their decision to alter the name of this body of water.

The tech giant, earlier this week, justified the decision on X, stating their traditional policy to make necessary adjustments according to updates from official government sources. Google further clarified that in cases where a place’s official name varies across countries, Google Maps will display the name as recognized by the user’s country, with other regions viewing both names.
