In response to the recent TikTok and CapCut ban, Meta has stepped into the fray with a strategic move, launching a new video editing app aptly named ‘Edits.’ To fill the void left in the market, Meta’s ‘Edits’ promises to offer a host of creative tools tailored to creators’ needs.
Instagram Chief, Adam Mosseri, revealed the plans for ‘Edits’ stating that it’s set to launch next month on iOS with an Android counterpart to follow. The app, currently under the scrutinizing eyes of selected creators, aims to offer the best possible tools for video creators.
Designed with creators in mind, ‘Edits’ is equipped with an array of creative tools. A tab dedicated to inspiration and another for idea cataloging complements its high-quality camera. Also, a unique feature enables creators to share drafts with friends or collaborators. Creators can then monitor the performance of their published videos on Instagram.
While the app might seem niche-oriented, gearing towards creators more than casual video enthusiasts, Meta’s move mirrors its strategic approach to exploit gaps in the market. The ban of TikTok in India in 2020 saw the swift launch of Reels, and a similar trajectory is expected with the introduction of ‘Edits.’
As the future of CapCut hangs in balance, Meta’s ‘Edits’ could be the destination video creators are seeking. Despite vigorous competition including the likes of a16z-backed video editing app Captions, CapCut’s usability instability presents an appealing opportunity for others to step in and fill the void.
