Meta, the social media behemoth, is reportedly in discussions to acquire FuriosaAI, a South Korean chip design company. This move is part of Meta’s strategy to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) hardware infrastructure, reducing its dependence on chipmaker Nvidia.
FuriosaAI, founded by former Samsung and AMD employees, specializes in developing chips that enhance the performance of AI models, including those for text generation like Meta’s Llama 2 and Llama 3. With investments totaling 90 billion Korean won (approximately $61.94 million) from companies like Naver, FuriosaAI has secured support from various industry players.
Meta’s acquisition of FuriosaAI complements its ongoing efforts to develop its own AI accelerator chips. This investment aligns with Meta’s recent announcement of plans to allocate up to $65 billion in 2023 to fuel its AI ambitions. By acquiring FuriosaAI’s expertise, Meta aims to enhance its AI hardware capabilities, accelerating the deployment and performance of AI models.
