Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, unveils that the tech behemoth is boosting its capital outlay in its bid to remain competitive within the ruthless AI arena. This information was disclosed via a Facebook post on Friday.
Zuckerberg projects Meta’s capital expenditure to reach between $60 billion-$80 billion in 2025, majorly for AI development teams and data center expansions. This figure is roughly twice as much as the $35 billion-$40 billion shelled out by Meta on CapEx last year.
In addition, Zuckerberg revealed Meta’s intention to activate approximately one gigawatt of compute this year. This amount is commensurate to the power used by 750,000 average residences. He also expects Meta’s data centers to be equipped with over 1.3 million GPUs by the end of the year.
This move by Meta coincides with similar large-scale infrastructural advancements by AI contenders. For instance, Microsoft has projected an $80 billion expenditure on AI data centers in 2025. Simultaneously, OpenAI has partnered in a joint venture, Stargate, potentially acquiring hundreds of billions worth of data center resources.
