In an alarming turn of events, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), Canada’s biggest school board, reports a significant breach in PowerSchool, potentially compromising around 40 years’ worth of student data.
The school board notified parents via a letter this week about the breach’s extent. It declared all students attending the school from September 1985 until December 2024 have been affected. The board, with a yearly cohort of around 240,000 students, preserved prior student records on PowerSchool to handle historical data requests.
TDSB found the breach includes key information: student names, addresses, birth dates, and phone numbers. Data since 2017, taken during the breach, also took in contact details of parents or guardians.
TDSB also highlighted the assurance they got from PowerSchool. The school software company reportedly informed them of an alleged deletion confirmation from the cybercriminals responsible for the breach. Nevertheless, PowerSchool hasn’t publicly discussed the supposed confirmation yet.
