Instagram Experiments with a Dislike Button for Comments

Instagram is currently testing a new feature that allows users to express their disapproval of certain comments on both Feed posts and Reels. However, unlike traditional downvote mechanics, the company has emphasized that there will be no public display of dislike counts.

According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the dislike button serves as a private way for users to flag inappropriate or irrelevant comments. These dislikes will eventually be factored into the ranking system for comments, ensuring that those with a significant number of dislikes will appear lower down.

This move is part of Meta’s broader effort to enhance the quality of the comment section on Instagram. By providing users with a tool to express their opinions, Instagram aims to foster a more positive and constructive atmosphere within its comment sections.

Although similar to Reddit’s downvote mechanism, it remains unclear whether Meta plans to assign the same level of significance to these dislikes as Reddit does in its upvote/downvote system.
