Meta’s decision triggers account deletion interests
Following Meta’s choice to scrap its third-party fact-checking and soften content moderation regulations, web users are increasingly seeking ways to delete their Facebook, Instagram, and Threads accounts. Many people hold Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, responsible for potentially turning the social media channels into misinformation avenues.
Exiting Meta: Downloading your data
If disillusioned by Meta’s tactics, here’s a guide on how to safekeep your data before deleting your accounts permanently.
Facebook: Archiving your personal data
Deletion of your Facebook account requires prior download of your personal data, including photos, active sessions, IP addresses and ad clicks, through a web browser on a computer.
Facebook: Deleting your account
Importantly, consider that once deleted, Facebook does not allow re-access. Deleting an account involves a request to Facebook, but accidental logins during the request process will result in cancellation. Bear in mind, your messaging history may remain visible to friends even after deletion.
Instagram: Downloading your information
To archive your Instagram data, visit the ‘Your information and permissions’ section under Accounts Center or Instagram Settings. From here, select ‘Download your information’ and choose your desired download format. Upon request, Instagram will notify you when your data download is ready.
Instagram: Account deletion
Once you have archived your Instagram data, you are set to delete the account on the webpage permanently. However, if you wish to rejoin later, you can sign up again using the same username, if available.
Threads: Account deletion
For Threads, deleting your Instagram account simultaneously removes your Threads profile. However, if you only wish to delete Threads, go to Threads.net and follow the deletion steps. Deletion implementation takes 30 days, with a 90-day wait period for rejoining with the same Instagram profile.
