German defense tech startup Helsing is expanding its drone manufacturing capabilities to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.
Helsing is producing 6,000 additional HX-2 strike drones, adding to the 4,000 HF-1 drones currently being delivered to Ukraine with German funding. Co-founder Gundbert Scherf stated, “We are scaling up HX-2 production in response to increased orders from Ukraine.”
Strike drones with AI capabilities play a vital role in enabling Ukraine to offset its disadvantages against Russia. Helsing’s drones can operate in swarms, enhancing their effectiveness.
The HX-2, unveiled in 2024, features integrated AI technology and is designed for mass production. Helsing focuses on a software-hardware combination, utilizing the Altra platform to connect drones.
To ensure production scalability and reduce unit costs, Helsing is establishing “Resilience Factories” throughout Europe. The first factory in Southern Germany is operational, with an initial capacity of over 1,000 HX-2 units monthly. These facilities source materials and labor locally, meeting national defense procurement requirements for sovereignty.
Helsing’s announcement coincides with the Munich Security Conference, highlighting Southern Germany as a defense hub. The startup’s recent strategic partnership with French AI leader Mistral emphasizes its commitment to European AI leadership and security.
