Google Maps Set to Reflect Trump’s Landmark Name Changes Soon

Recent executive orders from President Donald Trump will be reflected in Google Maps as the tech behemoth plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Denali mountain. This move comes in response to changes promulgated by the Trump administration which now bear official status, as confirmed by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America,” and reverting Denali to its former title of “Mount McKinley,” marks Google’s adherence to changes in official government sources. Yet, it’s important to note that the new “Gulf of America” designation will only be visible to U.S. users, consistent with Google’s policy of displaying geographic names as per each country’s official designation.

Moreover, despite the name changes deemed official on Friday by the Interior Department, Google Maps won’t reflect these alterations until the official American naming database, the Geographic Names Information System or GNIS, is updated.

In practice, this means that Mexican users of Google Maps won’t observe a change in the Gulf’s name while users in other countries will see both American and Mexican names for the Gulf side by side. The renaming of Denali to Mount McKinley will, however, be visible to global users.
