President Donald Trump has ordered a change to the name of the Gulf of Mexico, which has been known by that name for centuries. Google Maps has officially updated its U.S. maps to reflect the new designation as the Gulf of America. International users will see both names, while Mexican users will only see the Gulf of Mexico.
This move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to “restore American pride.” However, it has sparked some controversy, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum questioning Google’s decision.
Google’s policy is to align with the user’s country location when displaying names on Maps. This is determined by the user’s operating system, SIM, and network.
It is unclear if Apple will follow suit and update its Maps app to reflect the name change. Apple has not yet made any changes and searching for “Gulf of America” on Apple Maps yields no results.
Both Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook attended Trump’s inauguration. Cook personally donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund, while Google also made a $1 million contribution.
