To address the need for age-appropriate content, Google plans to test an AI-powered age estimation tool. This technology will determine users’ ages, enabling more tailored recommendations and user experiences across Google products, including YouTube. The trial will commence in the United States and expand globally over time.
Responding to concerns about excessive screen time, Family Link now includes screen time management tools. The “School Time” feature allows parents to restrict device usage during specific hours, ensuring focus during schooling. Parents can also limit access to certain apps to foster concentration.
Parents can further safeguard their children by adding approved contacts. This feature allows children to only make calls and send messages to designated individuals, providing reassurance when handing over phones to younger kids. The option becomes available in March.
Children with Android devices will soon be able to make in-store payments using Google Wallet. Parents of supervised minors can add a payment card to the child’s wallet, allowing tap-and-pay functionality. Parents retain control over card approvals, removals, and transaction monitoring.
As AI technology advances, Google will introduce AI-powered features for teenagers. The “Learn About” tool offers interactive learning experiences, while the AI assistant Notebook LM assists with research. These join existing AI features such as AI Overviews in Search, Gemini chatbots, and Circle to Search.
These advancements demonstrate Google’s commitment to protecting children online, aligning with growing regulations worldwide. Google has implemented measures like defaulting minors to SafeSearch, restricting sensitive ads, and age-gating content on YouTube.
