DeepSeek Surpasses ChatGPT to Reign as the Top Mobile Application in App Stores

Chinese AI Laboratory, DeepSeek, made headlines when its mobile application dethroned U.S-based AI Chatbot, ChatGPT, claiming the top position in App stores worldwide. As per Appfigures, DeepSeek is the No. 1 free app in U.S. App Store and 51 other nations.

DeepSeek’s rise to the top spot ensued a remarkable increase in its popularity after the launch of a series of open AI models. These models, developed with less costly AI chips, have challenged leading AI offerings by OpenAI and Google.

The cost-efficiency in AI model training by DeepSeek brought about a significant drop in Nvidia’s stock price by 17%, putting the entire tech industry on edge. The download metrics of DeepSeek’s mobile app skyrocketed, hitting 2.6 million downloads on both the App Store and Google Play.

DeepSeek’s app has secured a spot in the top 10 list for free apps in 111 countries on the App Store and in 18 countries on Google Play. Within the last seven days, an exceptional download surge was witnessed, recording a 300% increase as compared to Perplexity, another top-tier consumer AI app.

While China currently holds the most substantial app market for DeepSeek at 23%, other significant contributors are the United States (15%) and Egypt (6%).

The rising popularity of DeepSeek has sparked a debate on the stability within the consumer AI space, with direct competition to other popular consumer AI apps such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. With its rise to the top seemingly sudden, it will be interesting to see how long DeepSeek maintains this position.

The question remains on the future impact of DeepSeek’s cost-effective AI training technique on the global AI community, which could potentially pressure other leaders in the field to justify their high pricing or develop superior models.
