The Android-based application of Chinese AI lab, DeepSeek, proudly owns the highest rank on the Google Play Store, right on the heels of achieving top place on the Apple App Store.
Reports from the renowned app analytics firm AppFigures reveal that this impressive success dips its toe in the mid of January. Conceivably, the app’s popularity skyrocketed with 1.2+ million downloads on Play Store and 1.9+ million across the globe on the App Store. However, these figures may not account for every download, as the Play Store reveals a staggering tally of over 5 million under DeepSeek’s belt.
DeepSeek’s accelerated growth is fueled by their release of a series of viable open-source AI models, giving a competitive edge against western tech giants like OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, and Google. Intriguingly, DeepSeek claims to have trained its AI models at a fraction of the cost of competitors, and yet achieved significant results with inferior AI chips.
DeepSeek’s application offers a viable alternative to ChatGPT, underpinned by the company’s own V3 model. This app allows users to inquire and retrieve information from the web, analyze files, and is designed to synchronize user chat history across several devices.
Despite its triumph, DeepSeek has a significant battle ahead to maintain its lead in the world of chatbots. The long-term benchmark is set by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which boasts of 300 million weekly users. However, the tech industry has turned a keen eye towards DeepSeek and its suite of models lately, given startups such as Perplexity and the new venture of Pat Gelsinger, former Intel CEO, Gloo, have begun integrating DeepSeek into their operations.
