Broadcom, TSMC Eye Intel Acquisition to Reshape Semiconductor Landscape

Semiconductor giants Broadcom and TSMC are reportedly exploring potential deals to acquire significant portions of Intel Corporation, according to The Wall Street Journal. These discussions could lead to a major restructuring within the semiconductor industry.

Broadcom is allegedly considering the acquisition of Intel’s chip design and marketing divisions. However, it would need a partner to take over Intel’s manufacturing business. TSMC, on the other hand, is reportedly interested in gaining control of some or all of Intel’s chip fabrication plants.

While discussions are still in preliminary stages, the report suggests that TSMC’s interest is driven by encouragement from the Trump administration. However, a White House official has stated that the administration is unlikely to support a deal that gives a foreign entity control of Intel’s factories.

Intel’s recent business struggles have made it a potential target for acquisition by its semiconductor rivals. In September 2020, The Journal reported that Qualcomm had also approached Intel with a takeover proposal.
