Thursday marked a remarkable day for Chinese tech in India as IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw applauded the advances by Chinese AI Lab, DeepSeek, and confirmed the hosting of the lab’s models on India’s servers. Despite international scrutiny, DeepSeek’s progress has been deemed commendable by the IT minister.
This move comes as a surprise, given India’s previous stance on Chinese originated apps and services for alleged national security conflicts. However, DeepSeek’s nod of approval from the government is subject to compliance with India’s rigid data localization prerequisites.
Vaishnaw further cited that potential data privacy concerns can be mitigated by the localization of open-source models on domestic servers. The models are expected to be deployed on India’s burgeoning AI Compute Facility which boasts of prodigious GPU capacity.
In addition to hosting overseas AI models, India plans to bolster domestic AI development and innovation, reflecting a partnership with major chip designers. Vaishnaw estimates an impressive $30 billion investment in hyperscalers and data centres over the impending years.
Upon addressing countrywide AI initiatives, Vaishnaw affirmed that multiple institutions would collaborate on safety frameworks via a “hub-and-spoke model,” maintaining an open and application-focused approach.
