Jumping on the video trend, social media giant Bluesky has just unveiled its newest feature: a video tab integrated onto user profiles. This comes shortly after the introduction of a TikTok-inspired custom video feed, a direct response to the U.S. restrictions imposed on the popular video-sharing app.
The newly introduced video tab is poised to transform user interaction on Bluesky, offering individuals a platform to showcase their own video content reposted from other social networks, with TikTok being a notable source. It’s not just about creating vibrant, engaging user interactions, though—this novel feature could potentially provide Bluesky with another revenue source. This could take the shape of a charged service, allowing users to upgrade for extended duration or advanced quality videos, under Bluesky’s impending premium subscription offering.
Though the new video tab signifies Bluesky’s determination to respond to the growing demand for video sharing, not all of its users seem thrilled by the prospect of it becoming a TikTok competitor. Some are voicing their concerns, requesting an option to disable the video tab and prioritizing other fundamental features such as an Edit button.
However, the demand is apparent, with significant developer interest in creating video-centric Bluesky clients. Prominent developers are already working on “Bluesky TikTok” apps, including Sebastian Vogelsang, the Berlin-based creator of Bluesky apps Skeets and Flashes. Celeb investor Mark Cuban has also shown interest, stating his readiness to back a video app built on AT Protocol, the technology fuelling Bluesky.
Introducing the innovative video tab in the latest 1.97 update, Bluesky simultaneously made several other enhancements. These include a user-blocking menu post DM report and various translation improvements.
