Barcelona-based spyware startup Variston reportedly shutters down

Variston, a Barcelona-based surveillance software company, has reportedly been dissolved. This news comes nearly a year after the tech news website TechCrunch reported that Variston had started to shut down, laying off more than half of its staff. The liquidation was confirmed by a legal notice published in Barcelona’s registry on February 10th, according to Intelligence Online, a trade publication that covers the surveillance and intelligence industry.

The company’s downfall began after a 2022 Google report exposed the existence of Variston, which had previously operated in secret. Variston, founded in Barcelona in 2018 by industry veterans, allegedly prohibited employees from disclosing their place of employment. One former employee told TechCrunch that the exposure by Google “might have been the beginning of the end” for the spyware maker.

TechCrunch’s attempts to contact Variston for comment have been unsuccessful, and emails sent to the company’s public email address have gone unanswered.
