Apple has announced the release of the iPhone 16e, an updated version of its budget-conscious smartphone. The new device, priced at $599, introduces significant upgrades and enhanced features.
One of the most notable is the integration of Apple Intelligence, the company’s answer to artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT. This feature enables the iPhone 16e to generate text summaries, write letters, and create images.
The iPhone 16e is powered by the A18 processor, which is also found in the flagship iPhone 16 line. This chip allows the device to run Apple Intelligence efficiently. Additionally, the handset sports an in-house Apple C1 modem, reducing reliance on third-party chipmakers.
Design-wise, the iPhone 16e departs from its predecessor by adopting a more modern look. It features a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, and a USB-C port, replacing the Touch ID home button and Lightning port.
The camera system on the iPhone 16e includes a single 48-megapixel rear-facing camera with 2x zoom, enabling the capture of 24-megapixel images. A TrueDepth camera on the front allows for face unlocking.
Apple claims the iPhone 16e offers up to 12 hours more battery life than previous SE models, thanks to its A18 chip and optimized battery technology.
The iPhone 16e’s launch comes at a crucial time for Apple, as its market share has declined in China due to factors such as increased competition and the lack of Apple Intelligence’s availability in the region. The company is reportedly in talks to bring a localized version of its generative AI platform to China to address this issue.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e commence on February 21, with the device shipping one week later, on February 28.
