Apple recently unveiled an innovative API, the Advanced Commerce API, designed to augment the diversity of in-app purchases on its platform. Intending to boost creative experiences and grand-scale content catalogs, it accommodates subscriptions coupled with add-on options. The API operates without altering Apple’s commission structure.
According to the tech behemoth, the API is aimed at apps in three specific categories. The first including applications with extensive libraries of updated one-time purchases such as courses or audiobooks. The second category focuses on apps offering content by creators purchasable as a perpetual or renewable subscription. The third category is applicable to apps offering supplemental user-purchases within a subscription service like additional channels, sports, or regional content.
This introduction of the new API, the Advanced Commerce API, may have been influenced by last year’s incident with creator platform, Patreon, being urged to switch to the App Store’s billing system or face potential expulsion.
As part of efforts to add value for developers and encourage their loyalty, Apple is broadening its approach following the EU’s directive to include third-party app stores and alternate payment processing.
