Apple momentarily ceases AI News Summary Notifications following Erroneous Alerts

In the wake of criticism over irregular alerts, Apple has momentarily halted its AI notification summaries for news-based applications. The tech titan aims to bring overhaul changes to the notification summaries, enhancing their transparency.

In its recent developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple has opted to completely turn off notification summaries for news and entertainment apps. These features are expected to be reinstated in a future update after the necessary refinements.

This decision was taken after an incident where a BBC news article was distorted, suggesting Luigi Mangione, charged for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had committed suicide.

In response to this, Apple is not only discontinuing notification summaries for certain apps but also changing their presentation style. All summaries will now appear in italics distinguishing them from regular notifications. Furthermore, users will have the option to disable notification summaries for a specific app directly from their Lock Screen.

To elucidate the feature’s experimental status, a notification stating the beta nature of notification summaries will be available in the Settings app, alerting users to the possible existence of errors.

Apple had earlier hinted towards an update providing better clarity for the summary text generated by Apple Intelligence but the form it would take was uncertain. While a public beta is likely to be launched next week, the final release date for iOS 18.3 is as yet undetermined.
