Apple Advances In-app Purchasing with Newly Introduced API

Apple has recently unveiled a revolutionary API, the Advanced Commerce API, expected to enhance in-app purchase formats like subscriptions and content add-ons. This alteration doesn’t bring about changes in the existing commission framework.

Aiding developers to expand their businesses has always been a priority for Apple. The introduction of the Advanced Commerce API is aimed to further support evolving business models. These include extensive content catalogs, creator experiences, and subscriptions with optional add-ons.

Apple highlighted the eligibility and use cases for apps and developers, predominantly focusing on three categories. These categories include apps with a significant library of one-time purchases that are frequently updated; apps that feature creator-led content wherein customers can purchase the content as a one-time or renewable subscription; and apps that offer add-ons within a subscription service as renewable purchases.

In past events, Apple persuaded creator platform Patreon to transition to the App Store billing system or face potential removal. This move could be interpreted to support use cases like Patreon’s more effectively.

Apple has been striving to add more value to their platform for developers after the EU mandated the inclusion of alternative payment processing and third-party app stores. The company’s recent ventures include permitting retro game emulators and offering discounts to customers with expired subscriptions.
