Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati has embarked on a new endeavor with the launch of Thinking Machines Lab, a startup dedicated to advancing the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Aiming to bridge the gap between AI capabilities and practical applications, Thinking Machines Lab seeks to create AI systems that are accessible, customizable, and adaptable to diverse user needs.
Murati, accompanied by an esteemed team of scientists and engineers, including OpenAI co-founder John Schulman as chief scientist and former OpenAI chief research officer Barret Zoph as CTO, spearheads this venture. They are driven by the belief that AI has immense potential to enhance human endeavors, from scientific advancements to engineering breakthroughs.
Thinking Machines Lab will focus on developing multimodal AI systems that seamlessly collaborate with individuals, empowering them with a broad range of applications. The company also emphasizes AI safety, ensuring that the models released are not misused and that best practices for building responsible AI systems are shared with the industry.
Murati left OpenAI after six years of transformative contributions, such as her work on ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex, the underlying technology behind GitHub’s Copilot. She was also briefly OpenAI’s interim CEO and is considered a close associate of CEO Sam Altman.
Currently, Thinking Machines Lab is actively recruiting machine learning scientists, engineers, and a research program manager. The startup’s blog reveals a team of 29 individuals from leading organizations such as OpenAI, Character AI, and Google DeepMind.
