AI Journalist At Quartz: Generating News Content Unobtrusively

Quartz, a globally-recognized business news organization, has gradually been integrating articles generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI), attributed to “Quartz Intelligence Newsroom”.

Several months ago, Quartz commenced publishing succinct AI-produced earnings reports. However, from last week onwards, short articles created by AI have become part of its content. Quartz’s AI-produced articles average 400 words, abstaining from complete quotes instead of the standard human-written styles, attributing cited sources at the top of the article.

G/O Media, Quartz’s parent company, confirms the existence of this experimental AI newsroom but hasn’t revealed the AI models or tools being used. At present, the mechanism through which the AI picks which stories to cover remains undefined. The newsroom’s apparent objective is to allow Quartz’s human journalists to focus on more in-depth pieces.

Despite the claims that every AI-generated article undergoes review by the editorial staff before publication, some critics suggest there’s room for improvement – one such critique stemmed from an AI-generated summary of an article originally published on TechCrunch.

Nevertheless, AI-based journalism represents a cost-effective approach for organizations like Quartz. By not requiring salaries and benefits like their human counterparts, these AI “journalists” potentially maximize companies’ profits. As per G/O representatives, audience interaction with AI articles has significantly surpassed their expectations.

While Quartz’s AI foray has digital media tongues wagging, it isn’t alone in experimenting with AI content generation. Other media powerhouses, including CNET and Gannett, have ventured into this realm, with varying degrees of success.
