AI Being Trained to Understand Animal Emotions

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing and researchers are now using it to delve into the emotional world of animals. This groundbreaking technology may soon provide us with a way to interpret animal emotions, such as pain and illness.

Scientists at the University of the West of England Bristol and Scotland’s Rural College have developed the Intellipig system, which analyzes images of pigs’ faces. Using AI, it can identify signs of pain, sickness, and emotional distress, alerting farmers to potential issues.

A University of Haifa team, responsible for facial recognition software used in finding lost dogs, is applying their expertise to train AI in recognizing discomfort in animals. This is significant as animals share 38% of facial movements with humans.

Traditionally, identifying animal emotions has required humans to observe animals in various situations. However, a researcher at the University of São Paulo has experimented with using AI to learn from photos of horses’ faces before and after surgery and painkiller administration. The AI focused on the eyes, ears, and mouths and achieved an impressive 88% success rate in identifying pain indicators.
