Elon Musk’s recent mandate, requiring federal employees to email his team with weekly accomplishments, has sparked online resistance. Employees have threatened Musk’s “DOGE”-operated email address with mass spam, similar to a tactic previously employed against controversial government forms.
Musk’s instruction aligns with former President Trump’s directives, and failure to comply may lead to resignation. The public disclosure of the email address has ignited a coordinated effort to inundate it with nonsense, including the script of the “Bee Movie.”
This form of online vigilantism has been used in the past against anti-trans initiatives and law enforcement requests for illegal activity videos. In one instance, K-pop fans flooded a police app with fancam videos instead.
Musk’s team has received broad access to government systems, raising concerns about security. A 2015 OPM hack compromised personal information of 21.5 million individuals, highlighting the risks associated with data breaches.
Despite potential futility, individuals opposed to Musk’s policies remain undeterred. Spamming may not be immediately effective, but it serves as a symbolic act of resistance, requiring only minimal effort to copy and paste the “Bee Movie” script.
