Elon Musk’s xAI Unveils Groundbreaking AI Model, Grok 3

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has launched its latest flagship model, Grok 3, along with new capabilities for its iOS and web applications. Grok 3, xAI’s response to advancements like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini, is a multi-modal AI model trained on an expanded dataset using significantly more computing power than its predecessor, Grok 2.

Grok 3 boasts enhanced capabilities for image analysis, question answering, and powers various features on Musk’s social media platform, X. A smaller version, Grok 3 Mini, offers faster response times with slightly reduced accuracy.

xAI claims Grok 3 outperforms GPT-4 on benchmarks such as AIME and GPQA, and has also shown competitive performance in crowdsourced tests against other AI models.

Two specific models in the Grok 3 family, Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 Mini Reasoning, utilize “reasoning” capabilities to carefully evaluate problems and avoid common pitfalls. They have reportedly surpassed OpenAI’s o3-mini on benchmarks like AIME 2025.

Through the Grok app, users can access reasoning models by asking Grok to “think” or activating “Big Brain” mode for more complex queries. These models are particularly adept at handling mathematics, science, and programming questions.

xAI also introduced DeepSearch, an AI-powered research tool within the Grok app that analyzes information from the internet and X to provide abstracts in response to queries. Additionally, a voice mode is expected to be added to the app within a week, providing a synthesized voice for Grok models.

Premium+ subscribers to X will gain early access to Grok 3, while a new subscription plan called SuperGrok will unlock enhanced capabilities such as additional reasoning and DeepSearch queries, as well as unlimited image generation. Grok 2 is expected to be open-sourced in the coming months, following xAI’s policy of open-sourcing previous versions after the release of new ones.

Musk emphasized Grok 3’s improved neutrality, noting that previous versions tended to lean left politically due to their training data. xAI has worked to mitigate this bias and aims to make Grok 3 more politically balanced.
