EU’s Disinformation Code to Enhance DSA Compliance

The European Union’s (EU) Disinformation Code is poised to become a benchmark for compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), simplifying regulations for platforms committed to combating disinformation.

The DSA mandates platforms to address systemic disinformation risks. The Disinformation Code provides a comprehensive plan, including measures like reducing financial incentives for purveyors, enhancing service integrity by eliminating fake accounts, and supporting independent fact-checking.

Recently, the European Commission and DSA regulators solidified the Code’s integration into the DSA’s legal framework. This move aligns with the EU’s commitment to mitigate disinformation.

Despite Elon Musk’s resistance to EU online governance regulations and Meta’s withdrawal from fact-checking commitments, the Code remains a significant tool for platforms. Meta still appears on the list of signatory companies, highlighting the need for continued engagement.

The Code’s DSA integration will be implemented on July 1, 2025, allowing for time to assess commitments. However, ongoing investigations into platforms like X (formerly Twitter) may accelerate the timeline for enforcement.
