President Donald Trump has nominated Jonathan Morrison, a former Apple executive, to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Morrison’s nomination is currently under review by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
Morrison has extensive experience in the automotive industry. He previously served as the chief counsel for NHTSA during Trump’s first term and held leadership positions at the California New Car Dealers Association and Auto Advisory Services.
Morrison’s nomination aligns with Trump’s transportation policy goals. The Trump administration has prioritized streamlining regulations for self-driving vehicles and reviewing Biden-era fuel efficiency standards. The administration has also paused the development of federally funded electric vehicle charging infrastructure and delayed updates to automatic emergency braking requirements.
If confirmed by the Senate, Morrison will oversee NHTSA’s investigations into Tesla, which reportedly will continue under the leadership of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
