Innovative app Openvibe which consolidates multiple open social platforms, recently announced an inflow of $800,000 investment. The contributing body includes Bearings, notably Automattic – parent entity of WordPress.com and Tumblr, and Czech Founders VC.
Initiated in 2024, Openvibe initially provided support to crucial open social networks that operated on various protocols, namely ActivityPub-powered Mastodon, AT Protocol-focused Bluesky, and Nostr, powering numerous third-party apps. Expanding its horizons, Openvibe later included support for Instagram Threads, broadening its scope to the developer community.
The primary motivation behind Openvibe, as stated by CEO Matej Svancer, was to present a convenient portal to the open social web amidst the protocol differences. Openvibe promotes cross-network engagement by allowing users to stay connected across all networks and permitting cross-posting on multiple platforms simultaneously.
The fresh capital influx will likely accelerate Openvibe’s product development and user base expansion, polish the user interface, and foster integration with other social platforms among many.
Automattic’s investment deserves attention as it traditionally supports open-source projects, despite recent controversies involving its CEO and WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg.
Openvibe’s fundraising showcases the potential of apps and services leveraging open social protocols. Significantly, celebrity investor Mark Cuban recently invited video apps leveraging Bluesky’s AT Protocol.
Openvibe is accessible for free on iOS and Android, although a planned subscription model is on the horizon.
